It has been 600 days since the outbreak of the Ukraine invasion and the Gaza incursion by Israel. Despite the perception that major conflicts had diminished since the end of the Cold War, international conditions remain fraught. Even today, in the 21st century and as of 2023, looking outside Japan, you can face the reality of ethnic conflicts and large-scale military confrontations.

As a political entity transcending nations, the United Nations bears the mission of maintaining world peace and security. However, differing interests and stances among nations make consensus-building challenging in the context of Security Council reform. Given such circumstances, it is imperative to reiterate the significance of establishing a comprehensive and fair Security Council. This can enable the international community to collaborate more effectively and strengthen frameworks for ensuring sustainable peace and security. The discussions at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly are anticipated to serve as crucial steps in addressing these issues.
